Performance / Consumption Optimization
Whatever the installation, modern or old, whatever the site and finally whatever the operating profile, it is always possible to improve and optimize performance knowing that the term performance includes dimensions that sometimes evolve in opposite directions such as consumption and emissions.
Even if this version is reductive, in the majority of cases, performance optimization will be limited to reducing fuel consumption, a passenger ship can hardly be satisfied with such a black plume.
Whatever the objective, doing better and well : It is always possible ! So how to go about it ?
ADR will be able to offer a catalog of solutions to meet all the objectives determined by the contact, however, before going any further, it must be clear :
Optimizing is investing
Making your installation green, very fashionable these days, is generally investing the price of the engine in the post-treatment of gases, without forgetting that to achieve this, you need an engine in good working order that at this stage we will consider on a budgetary aspect – in other words: maintenance costs.
Between the volumes of spare parts and the quality of the service provider in charge of maintenance, we have often shown that if a low 100 corresponds to 75% operation, it will be necessary to multiply the investment by 2 to allow 90% operation and even by 4 to return or remain at nominal.
So let’s optimize :
- Consumption by the engine and its turbochargers,
- Fuel conversion
- Emissions by SCR post-treatment, Scrubber, ESP, filters,
- Pollutant discharges by separation
- The impact in general by an enlightened policy
What about the conversion to gas ?
This is one of the fuel conversions: Certainly effective but it represents the largest budget in the catalog of solutions and it allows us to conclude: optimization is financial.
Our process
Optimization request
What problem, what optimization, what budget – Here are the three questions that must be clarified at the initiation of the mission between its Client and ADR.
And this even if the optimization remains limited to fuel and oil consumption.
Site discovery
Once the optimization objective has been validated, it must be adapted to the site, its environment and its operation. Does the request respond to the site’s problem?
Propulsion requirements, primary energy reserve, local ecological constraints, safety of the installations but also operator habits, often good sometimes bad, general condition of the installations, fuel quality, each of the factors intervenes in the result or interferes with it.
Improve performance
This is a very broad approach that can range from a micro vision of the problem: Reducing fuel consumption means increasing the engine’s efficiency and therefore bringing a higher level of stress on the sensitive components of the engine but also on the engine systems and primarily the refrigeration circuits.
To a global macro vision that can range from painting the hull to installing an additional group to provide flexibility in a power plant that must cover base operation and peak loads.
Improving emissions will always have the primary consequence of degrading consumption – temporary or permanent, this constraint will have to be the subject of a compromise.
As many scenarios as there are installations for which ADRse strives to provide answers.
What fuel for my engine ?
What parameters will directly influence its behavior ?
What actions will allow me to maintain the benefit of my investment over time ?
